BAOR Regulars Part Two and Super-Haul of the Month

Finally got around to finishing off the second squad from the attack force at Hameln.  Right now just waiting for more reinforcements to get here in the mail (waiting on an M113 to round out the entire force).

I took Paul's advice and used a toothpick for most of the guys until I lost patience and used a small brush for a few of them.  I think they turned out, for the most part, better than the first batch but i'll let you all be the judge.

Today I also received the first batch of reinforcements in the mail - got the Airfix Scorpion/Scimitar, the Revell T-72M1, and my Armourfast Jagdpanther box for my late war Disposable Heroes skirmish.

Next up?  well we have the West German troops naturally, and their M48 tank which needs to be assembled and painted....
Nailed the DPM this time!!!  Thanks, Paul from "Plastic Warriors" for the tip.

GPMG gunners moving out.

the thing on the right is my "improved defensive position" I can use for 15mm or 20mm. It is a piece of trim moulding that I bought from a home supply store.  Painted black, sanded, flocked and dry brushed.  The longer pieces are for my 15mm armor in hull down, the smaller ones are for my infantry.

Forgot this bloke.  The last of my Russian VDV.  And important as he is holding a light support weapon!!!
Super Haul!  Reinforcements for my Hameln Brits, as well as some light armor for some upcoming Falklands Battles!  A T-72 for more modern Disposable Heroes: Seek Out, Close With, & Destroy Action, and of course an Armourfast Jagdpanther kit for my Disposable Heroes late war German forces.

  1. I think the cammo looks fine. All patterns are tough to paint... but we like a challenge, don't we?

    1. Thanks, John. Painting camo is always a huge challenge for me. Part of it is brushes, and part of it is timing each color. I really needed "modern" DPM Brits for my Hameln, Germany SOCWAD Scenario! Can't wait to play that!

  2. They look really good. That's a nice choice of models as well, the Airfix kit is great for being so old. You will have trouble with the tracks though, they were the worst I have ever seen I think. I ended up cutting them onto link and length and then glued them on. If I did it again I would use Epoxy. Good luck!

    1. Thanks, Ben! I have not built any "proper" models in a long time and I'm dreading the M48 and the Scimitar!!! I should have used S&S!! Thanks for the tip about the trackage. I will be sure to post my exploits and failures, as well as successes in building these kits.

  3. Nice work. If the figures shown are a mix of toothpick and brush for the black strokes, I can't tell the difference. Ben B's mention of the tank tracks flashed me back to something I made when I was 12. Rubber tracks that would not glue together with testors model glue. The horror, the horror!

    1. Sean - with the brush I tended to slop a little more paint on there. I found I just had to be more disciplined with the black but looking at some picks, I'm overall pleased with them - especially since they're for wargaming!!

Oh man you are not helping my model-phobia... Good thing we have some super glue in the junk drawer in our kitchen!

    1. Thank you, Gowan - they will be taking part in a fictitious British assault on Hameln in Germany to seize a bridge over the Weser River from the Soviet Airborne troops I painted up a couple weeks ago. The scenario is straight out of Ralph Peters' excellent book "Red Army" and was brilliantly adopted for wargaming in the book "The Bear Marches West" both of which are staple books in my home!

  6. Good work Steven. The Brits look very convincing. Just out of curiousity, would you rate them as being better troops than US Army of the day (1980s?) and why or why not?

    1. Thanks, Mike - convincing is something to shoot for in my opinion! Especially for wargaming minis.

I will probably get in trouble for saying this by some of my peers, but I would rate British troops above their US counterpart in the early to almost mid 1980s. Then as we approach 1985 and 6, US quality begins to dramatically improve as the efforts of the Army's senior leadership to rebuild the US Army begun in the late seventies begin to pay off. I don't think any story of the US Army in the late 1980s should begin any LATER than the Tet Offensive in 1968. On the whole, I would rate the quality of British troops as above the US Army in the seventies and the first half of the 1980s.

I hope that answers your questions. Then again, I've always been very fond of the Brits too...
