Soviet 1st Company, 1st Battalion, 1019th Rifle Regiment: RAPID FIRE

I started on the Rifle Companies with their attached heavy weapons for the 1st Battalion of the 1019th Rifle Regiment and boy am I happy with how these guys turned out!  These are standard Vallejo colors for Soviets (thanks Dave!), block painted, and then inked with FOW's "Manstein Shade" which turned out rather nicely.

For my RAPID FIRE Ponyri Station game, the Soviet Rifle Companies will be 9 figures, and the attached Heavy Weapons will be 3 figures, bringing the Rifle Companies up to a whopping 12 figures!  That's alot of firepower!

individually based, these guys can play in skirmish games like Bolt Action, or Disposable Heroes with relative ease.  My 3rd Battalion will be stand based, meaning they can play Hail of Fire, Crossfire, or Flames of War.

Tighten up those gaps comrades!  The rules state we need less than 1" between man to form a proper firegroup!

A rousing command figure, equally at home on the battlefields of BOLT ACTION, FUBAR, DISPOSABLE HEROES, or any other skirmish game.

One of my favorites.  I used a separate shade on the faces - Reikland Fleshshade and it turned out really nice!

URRAH!  URRAH!
And the real killers - the Heavy Weapons, set up behind the advancing troops.  Commissars Orders!

Check out that link belt!

NOT ONE STEP BACKWARD!

The second company is up next, along with the remainder of my VDV troops.  Also taking a hard look at Seven Years War rules as my huge giant SYW Commission will be back by late November!

  2. Sweet, I love 'em!

Soviet figures should always be advancing at the double/running. The pose fits the desperation of the Eastern Front the best. ;-)

    1. Thanks David! Starting 2nd Co'y now. Next week the whole battalion will be done and I'll have one more. Also starting on the tanks. Hope you like KV-1s. I've got a full Brigade of them ready to smash the fascist invaders!

    1. Thank you sir, will look much more impressive when I get full-on units on the table, along with the tanks. Let's face it, everyone's in it for the tanks!

  5. They look great. I bought a bunch of bases from warbases so that i could have individually based models put into the bases and used as teams. I put a bunch of work into them and they look great, but the issue is that they're really big! I didn't realize until after I had painted and based 50 of them that the warbases 4-man stand is twice the length of my FoW stands... still deciding what I want to do about that :/

    1. Thanks Brandon. I have found basing to be one of those things that is always a thorn in my side. My goal is to make my basing as universal as possible. So for this particular project, I'll base the first battalion individually so i can use them for other games, and the third battalion on team stands so they can be used for bigger scale games.

I've never seen the warbases stands - are they the ones where you can take the guys off? Those would be wicked useful for games like Battlegroup I think. Or RAPID FIRE.

That's a tough one. I guess you have to figure out which stands you like best and go with them? Or create 2 separate armies?

    2. Yep, you can take them out. I put a tiny bit of poster tac on each model and they're super secure and not permanent. here's a pic: http://i.imgur.com/2rn5DIi.jpg

It's a really cool idea, but they make each team so much larger than I'm used to... still figuring it out.

    3. They look pretty sweet. Well as long as you have a rules set that they work with that you like I think they work. They'd look really cool with Hail of Fire but you'd need a big table. (actually they'd look alot cooler than my team stands - just saying. They have that random "infantry formation" "patrolling" look about them).

    4. yes indeed, I love the look. but when i actually got them onto the table i realized how unwieldy they were due to size. trying to his them into building etc became a big issue, same with fitting the expected number of stands into area terrain, etc. I could try taking them off the stands in those cases, but it sounds clumsy and I feel a little defeated at that point. Gah! ;b

  8. Splendid work - well painted. I have some of these BF figures, they are among my favourite Sov minis. Peter Pig does some nice stuff as well.
