More February WIP: AWI "Jersey Blues" & 10mm SYW Prussian Regiment

This year I've really been trying to stick to my plans and that means painting American War for Independence troops.  The good news here is I only have a very small amount of units left to paint.  This is one of them - the famed "Jersey Blues" or 1st New Jersey Regiment.  In an effort to bolster my forces for my upcoming Germantown game, I realized that I need a few more units of British and Continentals in 15mm to make it happen!

24 x 15mm "musket miniatures" Continentals
I've always loved the uniforms of the mid-atlantic colonies and their military forces during the Revolution.  You see lots of browns and blues in the uniform coats and the New Jersey regiments had some very unique uniforms with red shirts, light blue on darker blues. etc.  Here the regiment is depicted in all its blue clad glory!  Truth be told there are many misfit troopers in here in various kinds of kit, however with the precarious American supply system I figure these men used what they could get their hands on.  Either way, it all works!

These men are clearly on campaign now and some have taken to wearing straw or field hats instead of their tricorne hat.  By the way, I love the yellow trim on the hats.

going toe to toe with British regulars!

Also, continuing the momentum of my 10mm projects, I completed another 10mm SYW Prussian Regiment today (30 total figures).
This regiment is different with white facings, and cuffs, but still the red turnbacks.

Total things painted in February:
  30 x 10mm SYW figures
  24 x 15mm AWI figures
  13 x 1/285 aircraft
Total 67 painted things.

  1. Nice work! The AWI colonists in mixed kit is perfect! Love your single base BMUs for your SYW project.

    1. Thank you, Jonathan! The single base BMU has long been a dream of mine and this scale/era I is literally perfect for it! I'm starting on the Austrians tomorrow and all of the Prussian cavalry! Can't wait!

    2. Single base BMU is my preference for most eras and scales. I can’t wait to see more of your 10mm SYW project as well.

    3. I have tons of lead for both 10mm SYW and 10mm Napoleonics. Originally my cunning plan was to base all of my 10mm Naps and SYW on single stands but I've abandoned the effort with my napoleonic 10mm and will base them like the rest of their sister units.

    4. Jonathan do you run into any problems with BMUs in the Napoleonic era?

  3. Sorry - above deleted and reposting as I missed out the word ‘base’, so the post looked daft!

The Jersey Blues look lovely, what a nice unit.

I just can’t make up my mind about single base units. It looks right for my 1066 stuff, but as a single block, they don’t always sit well on the Kallistra hex hills, which are quite rounded, so a single base often has one or both ends hanging in the air, while multi-base conforms to the contours better. Road movement and differing formations is another consideration, but with easier work-arounds.

    1. Many thanks, Norm! I have experimented with single based units for both napoleonic and seven years war troops. Ultimately, I abandoned the napoleonic effort because the majority of my naps are based on 1" square boxes, 4 x to a unit. I didn't want to have to rebase all of them, nor did I want to have 2 x separate armies. The intent was to base a 10mm army purely for commands and colors napoleonic. I'm continuing to plug away at my naps, although on individual stands.

With my 10mm SYW I felt that the project is new enough (ie I have no other 10mm SYW troops painted or based) that I could commit to a project without having multiple, similar armies based differently.

I love the look of the miniature massed regiments on the table and the BMUs are my favorite for the spectacle alone.

For your kallistra hills, I understand the dilemma and the sides hanging off the hills while the unit balances precariously would bug me!

For my hex games I use a now-defunct terrain system called "warzone" which I think was made for 40k. The hills are made wedding cake style and flat at the top and they sit nicely in a 4" hex.

Hey speaking of 1066, any hints or teasers as to when your loyal fans might get to see it? ;)
I have single based, 10mm dark ages and fantasy troops would would love to give it a spin sometime!

    2. 1066 is less than half done and other things keep jumping the queue!

  5. Excellent! Loving the continentals.
Looking forward to Germantown. What rules are you thinking of using?

Actually, I have realised that I have figures for all the scenarios in Slack Chowder bar the Zulu one - so I may try them all out this year just to prove that I can LOL

    1. Thank you sir! I was wanting to use "slack chowder" for Germantown as I like the unpredictable nature of the command rolls and the inconsistency of unit performance which I feel will capture the AWI nicely.

I rather enjoyed the Slack Chowder Freeman's Farm scenario from the first edition.

Germantown is a good, grinding slugfest which i can't wait to get on the table!

  6. These are very well done, being rather diminutive figures after all. I do like the effect of the big bases. Impressive array!

    1. Thank you, sir! The big base units have always been a goal of mine and with the 10mm they work very well.

  7. The New Jersey blue colors look great, but I love the massed look of the 10mm guys. Nice work all around!
